The recent bombing at a medical building in Palm Springs has deeply shaken our entire community, especially those of us in healthcare. As the team behind Desert Vision Center, a cataract surgery practice in Rancho Mirage, we felt the impact, not just physically but emotionally.
Dr. Tokuhara, who is on staff at Desert Regional Medical Center, received emergency alerts from the hospital as the crisis unfolded. Soon after, he received a call from Ian Mullings, Administrator of El Mirador Surgical Center, informing him that all surgical cases for the following Monday, including ours, were canceled out of caution.
Though our surgery center sustained only minor cosmetic damage, the emotional toll has been far greater.
We had to make difficult calls to our patients, some who had waited months for surgery, others who had traveled long distances. Many were understandably anxious, not just about the delay, but about their safety. In those moments, the usual roles of doctor and patient faded. We were simply people, trying to make sense of the senseless.
And yet, even in the face of fear, there was grace. Patients responded with compassion. Our team came together instinctively. And our community, once again, showed why this valley is so remarkable.
It’s natural to focus on fear in moments like these. But what’s more powerful is what comes after: Patients checking in on us. Colleagues offering help without being asked. Staff returning the next day with heavy hearts but steady hands. The resilience of this community has been deeply humbling.
